Welcomes State Representative Maurice West for Inspiring After-School Visit

Rockford, IL — The halls of the Ken-Rock Community Center were filled with excitement and energy this week as State Representative Maurice West spent the afternoon visiting with students in the center’s After-School Program.

Representative West, who serves Illinois’ 67th District, took time out of his busy legislative schedule to connect directly with the young people of Rockford, listening and laughing, with our children!

A Hands-On Afternoon with Ken-Rock Kids

Rather than delivering a formal speech, Representative West chose a more meaningful approach by engaging directly with the children.

Investing in Rockford’s Future

Executive Director Savannah Palmer expressed appreciation for Representative West’s continued support of Ken-Rocks mission.

Ken-Rock’s After-School Program provides a safe, structured, and enriching environment for youth throughout the school year. Students receive homework assistance, participate in creative arts, recreational programming, and character development initiatives designed to help them grow academically and socially.

Building Bridges Between Leadership and Youth

Representative West emphasized the importance of staying connected to community organizations like Ken-Rock that directly impact families every day, and the next generation of leaders.”

The afternoon concluded with group photos, high-fives, and plenty of smiles. For many of the students, it was their first time meeting an elected official in person, an experience that left a lasting impression.

A Community That Cares

Ken-Rock Community Center continues to serve as a pillar in Rockford, offering youth sports, summer camps, senior programming, and after-school services that strengthen families and neighborhoods alike. Visits from community leaders like Representative West reinforce the powerful partnerships that help make this work possible.

As the students returned to their activities, one thing was certain the visit was more than symbolic. It was a reminder that leadership is most powerful when it is present, engaged, and invested in the community it serves.
